Cascade the Start Menu Page

The Start Menu in Windows 98 forms an increasingly long column that you must scroll to see the top and bottom. For some of us it was easier when Win95 simply formed new columns side-by-side. You can change Win98 back to this form by drilling down in the Registry and adding a new String. Here's how:

Using REGEDIT.EXE, navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ Software \ Microsoft \ Windows \ CurrentVersion \ explorer. In the right-most pane, create a new Text Value. Type "StartMenuScrollPrograms" (without the quotes) then hit ENTER. Now right-click on the string you just created, and,  in the 'Value Data' box, type "false" (without the quotes), then click 'OK.' Close REGEDIT, tap the F5 key (to refresh your Desktop), and voila!

Note: This may not work on all systems. This tip originally seen in Brian Livingston's column in InfoWorld magazine.

Note: If you're not comfortable with running
Registry Editor, please don't practice here! This
is an advanced tip and only for those who know
how to navigate safely around the registry. Dire
consequences can result from seemingly minor
mistakes. Always back up the registry before tweaks.

Reboot and that's it; the Start Menu will re-order itself.
